Elon Musk: Neuralink Chip Will Help Humans Control Super AI
Elon Musk believes that the Neuralink chip will be an ideal solution for humans to merge and compete with future superintelligent artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
The Importance of Neuralink for the Future
In an interview with computer scientist Lex Friedman over the weekend, Musk stated that Neuralink will not only allow humans to control simple computer interfaces with their thoughts but also provide extraordinary capabilities. He jokingly said, “Let’s give everyone superpowers.”
Musk predicts that after using the implant device, traditional human-computer interaction will become “painfully slow” compared to the quicker communication possible with Neuralink.
Musk has repeatedly affirmed that Neuralink is the technology that will drive the symbiosis between humans and AI in the future. He considers it the best solution to prevent AI from surpassing and controlling humans, avoiding a “Terminator movie robot” scenario.
He emphasized that Neuralink is a crucial idea in efforts to ensure AI safety, allowing humans to achieve computational abilities similar to AI if the technology advances significantly.
Current Applications and Potential of Neuralink
The first Neuralink chip was implanted into the brain of Noland Arbaugh, a 29-year-old quadriplegic from Arizona, in January. Within weeks, Arbaugh was able to control a computer mouse with his thoughts. The company has now performed the procedure on a second person.
While major technology companies worldwide are racing to develop superintelligent AI (AGI), Musk has criticized OpenAI. He co-founded OpenAI and has expressed concerns that the company is developing too quickly. Musk believes this rapid development is happening without adequate safety measures.”
Besides competing with AI, Musk suggests that Neuralink has the potential to restore damaged nerve cells and assist the blind and paralyzed. Neuralink could also address neurological issues such as schizophrenia or seizures. Additionally, it has the potential to improve memory.
Musk stated that the goal of Neuralink is not only to restore normal functioning for those with neurological damage but also to enhance natural human abilities. He believes that in the future, Neuralink users will have superior vision compared to the average person.
Challenges and Concerns
Neuralink, co-founded by Elon Musk and seven other members in 2016, has already garnered significant attention. Musk is ambitious about Neuralink’s potential to change the world and open up telepathic possibilities. However, despite its promising potential, cybersecurity experts remain concerned about the risk of hacking.
